Rhodes, the largest and capital of the Dodecanese islands, is said to be the sunniest place in Europe, with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year.
With narrow cobbled streets that date back to the days of the Knights of St John lined with cafés, restaurants and boutiques, but otherwise the town seems untouched since medieval times.
The “palia poli” (the old city) is the medieval city of Rhodes, surrounded by a high defensive wall. It is one of the few medieval cities still inhabited in its largest part, excluding its museums, of course. Walking along its cobbled streets one is reminded of iron-armored horse’s hooves clapping, and steel swords clashing and clanging.
When you are tired of going round in the Old Town, the New Town of Rhodes, just a short distance from the Old Town, awaits your exploration. This is where the beaches lie, and where hotels, shops, restaurants, discotheques, and even a casino, are packed together to create a lively ambience. The resorts of Rhodes have good beaches that offer everything from lively water sports to quiet seclusion. And if you like getting about, the island has spectacular sights such as the Acropolis at Lindos and the famous Valley of the Butterflies.
Faliraki is the "party central" on the island and gay friendly with a lot of venues, very friendly to all tourists, regardless of origin or preferences. Mostly foreign mob, and the owners are friendly to all homosexuals in general.
